Hallicrafters SX 25 Speaker

Hi,

I just acquired a SX 25 but without the external speaker.

it has two speaker connections labeled 500 and 5000 ohms.

What would be a suitable substitute to the hallicrafters speaker?

It would be nice just to go ahead and get the correct Hallicrafters speaker for that classic radio. Your radio has about 10 watts output. The Hallicrafters speaker has a big magnet, and the size for best sound. You could however replace the output transformer with like A Chicago Standard Transformer A-3839 . That one has taps for a 4 - 8 - 16 ohm speaker ..

Or instead of replacing the output transformer, just use a 500 Ohm Z or 1K Ohm Z to 4/8 matching transformer.

I have the same set.

It has so much audio drive, that it will work well into an 8 ohm speaker, believe it or not.

Yeah Lou, I too have used an 8 ohm speaker on those SX model Hallicarfters. However if you really turn it up and get it a little on the loud side, the poor old output transformer is working into what it looks to be a near short. Can warm it up a little with a 10 watt push pull driving it. With a real Hallicrafters speaker it does make a difference with the over all sound from High to Low. The speaker for an SX-25 has the same deco like trim to match the radio. Still a few around to be had, and makes that classic Hallicrafters more enjoyable.

Right now I'm using an 8 ohm with a series 500 ohm resistor. Cuts down on the volume but is ok for now. I believe the speaker number is PM-23. Did not find any on ebay or google. If anyone has one they want to part with, my email is posted. Thanks for the help.

Let me add something to my last post. There are hallicrafters speakers on ebay and google, just not the PM-23.
