45 RPM ROVER

Hello everyone. I just purchased one of these Columbia Masterworks portable 45 rpm slide in phonographs. On purchase, the motor worked but no sound, after opening it up, the needle was gone, so I ordered an exact replacement, now it plays, but the only sound is a motorboating from the speaker. I know on old radios and phonos the cartridge and electrolytics go, but this is a 60"s transistorized job and I thought that those cartridges didnt dry out? Does anyone have a suggestion? help.

Even though it is transistor, the electrolitic capacitors do still dry out. Even more so if it been in a hot car for a few years. If it motor boating that does not sound like a bad cartrige. Might as well go ahead and re-cap the unit. Those capacitors should be very common ones, and easy to get.

Warren,

I do not have a schematic, but on the chassis, I can see 2 rather large tubular items, unmarked from what I can see, that must be the caps, any idea on values to use to be safe?

I do not know what any of the values are, but if those have card board covers over them, try and slide them off.
there values are most times stamped on them. If you can look under the chassis where all the parts are, you might even see leakage at there connections.
