Squealing Radio
2/5/2001 9:53:25 PMKevin
I recently bought a Westinghouse WR-209 radio, and when it is turned on and the volume turned it, it squeals very loudly. It doesn't pick up any stations, and the squeal occurs across the entire band, but only when the volume is turned up. When it's turned down there is only faint static. The inside is extremely clean, and all the tubes light up (though I know that doesn't mean they are good). Anyway, does anyone know what I should look for to rememdy this? I'm a bit new to old radios. If you need any more details just ask.

Thanks very much for any information.

Hi,
Check for an open capacitor in the plate circuit of the output tube. Usually it is is moderate value (.01 to.1) that connects from the plate to ground.

Also Check the "B" voltage divider for an open, or out of value resistor. Sometimes this is the metal clad type riveted to the chassis, or may be some of the higher wattage resistors. (Dogbone and fussible types, or just a large version of the carbon composition types.)
