RCA Victor Model 50 (1946/7?)
4/21/2009 9:22:48 AMBruno Bourgoin
Good Morning,

My name is Bruno Bourgoin, and I am writting from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. To put it plainly and briefly I am a huge geek, owning multiple servers for my apartment.

Having said that, I have, as of late, had an increasing desire to "return to roots". Last weekend, I purchased 2 tube radios from a pawn shop/flea market.

I am now trying to find owner's manual and or schematic for each of them. One of them doesn't even seem to exist in any list or website.

It is an RCA Victor "Model 50" built in Canada circa 1946/7. Does anyone have any information on this radio?

Here is a photo from someone else who has one:
http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/546530/overview

Thanks to all of you who may try to help.

Bruno

Hi, your radio could be a VR-50. Tubes in that one are 6SA7, 6SK7, 6SQ7, 6U5, 6F6G & 5Y4G. If those match I can probably find a schematic. They also made a R-50 with 3 X 58, 3 X 56, 47 and 80 tubes, a much earlier radio.

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. I checked the schematics on this site for those radios - well, the R-50 anyway, and nope. None of the radios with a 50 in them (B50, M50, etc) are the right one. They all have the wrong number of tubes or control knobs.

Is there anything else I can provide to help Identify the radio?

Hi Bruno, I think I have located the data you want. It is posted at--

That's it!!!

I don't know why I couldn't find this in any list or other sites. Any ideas?

Thank you so much for your help. Now, I'm going to try to find the same thing for the Silvertone Wayfarer 8224 I bought.

Thanks again for you help.

Not many Canadian radios are posted online in sites such as this one's "Resources" section. Those that are posted are earlier versions. The RCA 50 is from my schematic collection and CD of Canadian schematics.

Your Silvertone model sounds like it may have been made in the USA. The model number is similar to those made for Sears. It could have been made in Canada though. Are there any other numbers on the back of the chassis.

Ed,

I know for a fact that is was made by/for Sears & Roebuck Co. I believe it is Canadian as well. I will get more information from it tonight and post it. Thank you very much fo ryour continued help.

Here is what looks like an identical model to mine:

Ok, here's the info...

W464 is written on pretty well all pieces of paper (scematic, layout, etc).

The chassis number is: C817.46450

It was built by Simpson Sears / Sears Roebuck

All labels were printed in the USA, but there's an additional sticker on the inside top that states "Licensed in Canada Under Patent and Patent Rights Of Canadian Radio Patents Limited".

I hope this helps. I had no luck looking up W464 or the full chassis number. Maybe it's in your book of Canadian Radios.

Thanks again Ed.

Hi, I was unable to find that number in my data. There are several C817-XXXXX but not that one.

It is possible that it was USA made and imported or perhaps later production than my schematic collection.

Perhaps posting in the forums section of www.antiqueradios.com would locate someone with that schematic.

Ed,

Again, many thanks regardless of the outcome. I appreciate a helping hand nonetheless.

Bruno; The Silvertone 7224 and the 8224 were made in both Canada and the USA. The 2 sets are identical except for the knobs and the cabinet colours. The 7224 is brown leatherette and the 8224 is grey and black. The Sams Photofact folder is Set 382, Folder 11, dated 12-57. I have both the 7224 and the 8224 radios; in fact my 7224 is posted on E-bay #300310521853 right now. I could mail you a copy of this photofact if you need it. Send me your address.

Ed,

My computer was recently infected and I lost the file you sent me a few months back (see below).

I was wondering if you could possibly send it to me again? I promise, I will back it up this time. I was lucky to have backed up most things, but this file was a casualty.

Thank so much for you help. I appreciate it.

Hi Bruno,
It looks like it will play AM740 really well all day long. I listen to it here in DC, but only in the evening.
Restoring a radio is great. Finding that it is worth listening to is even better.

Bill Grimm

Bill,

It was rather serendipitous that when I listened to it for the first time, it was Sunday night, and the first station I dialed in to was AM740. What was playing? Benny Goodman, and a whole program of music from the golden era of radio.

Hi Bruno,
These radios become complete works of art only when playing music like that. I am really glad AM740 is there.
In this area we have two low budget stations that play vintage music, but they fade out at night.
Since it has 50,000 watts and a good antenna system, I suspect you may have a problem getting it in places you don't want it.

Enjoy!

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

Hi,

Afraid not. My family is from NB. Settled there in 1700s when they came from France. Never went into Quebec.
