Tubes That Test High
4/3/2009 9:22:03 PMBob Masse
Hi All! I've was just testing some tubes I have acquired. There were 5 #UX201A tubes that when tested, on Hickok 600A, 4 read normal and 1 read right off the end about 3X average that is listed in the chart. It did not have any shorts. I tested it on a Precision 10-20 and again no shorts and it read right off the scale. Both tube testers have been recently serviced and calibrated. When a tube is reading too high can it still be used? Is there a way to get it to read a bit lower? Bob Masse

If a tube has gas it will read high, did you check for gas.

:Thanks for asking. I'm new to this and knew gas was bad but didn't know it could cause a tube to read high. Thanks for that piece of info. So I did a gas test this morning and there was zero needle movement so no gas. Is there a rule of thumb for how high a good tube can read and what effect would a tube that reads 3X average have on a radio? Bob Masse : :

Adjust grid voltage on your tester more negative. This will reduce meter deflection.

Unusual for good tubes to read very high. UX201A's are old and have little uniformity between tubes. As easyrider8 said still could be gassy. Tubes testers don't do a good job on this test.
