Alkyd Varnish vs Spray lacquer for those winter jobs
3/27/2009 7:43:49 AMPeter G. Balazsy
I've just finished fully restoring this solid, beautiful 1936 Westinghouse WR209.

Now...I normally use Deft spray lacquer for refinishing.. (and I truly love it) but I was tired of getting over-spray lacquer all over my nice garage floor and everything else...

So someone at ARF suggested using Alkyd Varnish and brush it on.

It's not as hard as polyurethane and lays down nicely.

I used high gloss and it dried like glass. So I took it down with some white Dupont rubbing compound on a 0000-steel wool pad.

It worked out nicely and I finished it with some Butchers wax.

I did my Crosley 1117 with varnish, before I knew about colored lacquer. I added paste stain to it to color it. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten around to adding additional coats, so I can't show a glass finish, but if it's the right consistency, brushed varnish can look amazing. My grandmother was a painting expert (including oil paints on canvas), and could make any brush enamel look like a factory finish.

I was going to put up my Facebook photo of it, but unfortunately that lets everyone in the world view all of my other photos (not that any of them are bad).

( For Lew Rezzit)
Here it is again Lew.

As you can read above I did this one using Aljyd Varnish for the first time.

Try it. Works nicely.

Now I must get another wood junker and see if I can make a silk purse, too. Thanks, Peter.
