philco 38-14

hello all! working on a couple of philco 38-14 models.
A early ac/dc set. I notice when I turn on this set that the filament resistor can (#36 in the schematic) gets really hot on these units. Is that typically normal? I have two and they both seem to run very hot. Or is this something that is wearing with age and should be replaced. Any body have experience with these filament resistor cans?

Those do run hot. It's normal. All they really are is droping resistors in a can.

Hi Blackbird,
I agree with Warren. These do run hot. If youi want to check them, check that they are dropping the proper voltage across them. Sometimes they go high in ohmic value and the voltage across them increases, while the voltage across the tube filaments decreases.

Great all is well then. It's kinda odd though that they stuck em in a metal can that traps heat!
