oops. the taste is the difference between oral and rectil thermometers. i dont know about tubes

Hi Ray,
00A is the generic name for the tube, 300A is the name with the manufacturer code. I think 3 was Arcturus, but not sure. The letter suffixes changed with advances in the designs of the filaments.
Tale a look at this, http://mysite.du.edu/~etuttle/electron/elect27.htm I have found it fascinating for the technical content about tubes, but it also has a small section on the '01 tube, which was the same vintage as the '00.

00A is a 4 pin tube used as detector in early battery radios.

300A and 300B are Western Electric numbers. These are very expensive audio output tubes.

There are also 300A's with a prefix. Same as 00A but marked as Cunningham.
