1975 Dodge Dart Radio - Broken volume control
3/6/2009 12:52:51 PMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
I hope this isn't too new to ask questions about. This one has a snapped off volume control shaft. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement control for it?
The model number label is missing. This is an AM Mono radio.
There's a part number on the bottom plate "15D42183 C01" That's all I can find.

Thanks,

Dave

If you have access to even a small stub remaining of the shaft, you might try brass tubing from a hobby shop. It is thin wall, comes in telescoping sizes from about 1/16" to 1/2" May find a perfect fit to slide down over the existing stub with a little JB Weld. The outside (knob) end may require a little effort to get a correct fit. Make sure to verify the control is still good, because a hit hard enough to break the shaft may have damaged the control inside.

Marv,
The shaft is snapped off flush with the tone control shaft. The control is undamaged, just the shaft. I don't think that there's very much space between the inner and outer shafts to slide a tube. But I'll try. How much do you think the brass tube and J. B. Weld will cost?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
Typical lengths are 12" and 36", and of course price varies with size. I would think the 12" would be satisfactory for your purpose. Maybe a buck or two for the brass tubing and $3-$4 for the JB Weld. If typical, this control would be difficult to remove from the radio, but if it waa, the 2 pots can be separated. Usually have bend tabs that can be unbent to separate the two, and access to the broken shaft gained. If the wall thickness of the tubing is too great to keep the two shafts from binding, then brass shim stock, solder and an extension shaft might work, saving the expense and search for an exact replacement control. The shim stock can be found at the same hobby shops that sell the tubing. This type of repair almost always requires the removal and separation of the control. As an after thought, if you opt to remove the two pots from the radio, clean the the carbon resistance elements with a Q-Tip and denatured alcohol or suitable substitute. Take care not to be too agressive with the Q-Tip. I've had the resistance mat'l (carbon??) rub off altering the value.

Jim,
This is a bit off topic, but one 01A has pins that are too short. But it does make a nice display tube. We can start another thread if we want to talk about the Crosley radio.
On the car radio if someone has the schematic it would be nice because there is no audio output but I have 12 volts everywhere it seems it's supposed to be. With the schematic I can look further.

Thanks,

Dave
