Philco 40-130 replacement power transformer
3/1/2009 3:32:01 PMBen Forrester
The Philco 40-130 that I am restoring has a bad power transformer. Can anyone recommend a replacement type and where to purchase. The schematic shows 305 volts across the first filter cap. What voltage should the secondary have from center tap to get the 305 volts across the first filter cap? The schematic indicates that this Philco has a negative-filtered power supply and I was not sure what the xformer secondard voltage should be. Thanks for your help.

Hi Ben, I believe I have a model 40-130 in storage. I don't know the condition of the transformer but can check if you are interested in a used one. Click on my name for my email address and we can discuss directly. Antique Radio Supply (AES) carries new replacements. Nick S

Many thanks for the info Nick. After reviewing the power supply schematic, I have ordered a replacement xformer from Radio Daze that should do the job. I have repaired several Philco's but this is the first negative filtered power supply that I have worked on. I will contact you if I need additional parts fron your 40-130.

The negative power supply is no big deal, it was widely used by Philco and others. It just means the center tap on the high voltage winding is not grounded as in more 'normal' circuits but goes through one or two resistors before going to ground. Take off points between the resistors give various levels of B+ grounding.

:I fear I may have oversimplified these 'negative' circuits. Beware of the polarity and 'negative' connections of the electrolytics; in your case only one goes to a conventional ground.
There is a good article on this website under 'Reference/Tips and Training': Those Pesky Negative Power Supplies.
