radiola #63, am/shortwave band, only faint audio
11/30/1998 12:09:26 PMRon Johnson
Got this radio at an auction, and only twice have I
heard amplified audio from the speaker, and it only
lasted a few seconds. Yet if you put your ear up to
the speaker you can hear voice and music very, very
faintly. I'm new at this, but with a scope I can see
modulation on one of the speakers terminals, the other
speaker terminal is at chassis ground. Any help
locating the problem would be appreciated.

Hi Ron,
I don't have a schematic for the model 63 but I suggest that you start by finding out if the output stage is weak or the receiver section. First, if you can put a signal to the grid of the output tube you should get sound from the speaker. If the set has a transrormer you can just put your finger on the grid and hear 60 Hz hum or couple the heater to the grid with a small capacitor (use the heater volts as a signal). If the output stage is faulty a voltage check may find the fault. A possible cause is an open circuit speaker transformer. They sometimes are intermittent when they fail. If the set is transformerless it may have a live chassis (one side connected to the mains) so be carefull. See if you can find any problems and let's know and I'll try and help more if needed. Good luck, Don.
