The FM AM Phono Switch has been cleaned and still needs to be worked to get it to catch in the right spot. The radio will play well for some hours. Then it will just cease all noise except for speaker hash, no audio and no music. I have ordered 7 of 11 tubes and trust it is one of them that is heating up and then separating somehow. What other thoughts? Thanks for ideas. Sams 386-9

Are you talking about FM or AM "play well for some hours"? Did working on the switch get the FM too work a little, or are we still on the AM?

For that rotary switch. Look at it with a magnifier glass for loose rivets that hold the non moving contacts.
You may have to careful solder the rivets to the contacts. Also look as you rotate it for contacts that are not being spread as they come in contact. You may have to careful bend the contacts when in an open spot to make good contact when it is in contact. Hope you understand what I am trying to say ..
As far as the audio problem. If you already have tubes on the way, maybe that will fix it. If not post again.

Although many novice collectors do it, the "shotgun" approach to repair is never very cost effective or satisfying in restoring a radio - and oftentimes still fails to fix the problem even after a sizable outlay of money and time. More often than not, this leads to frustration and a disgruntled collector who soon loses interest in the hobby.

The true art of radio repair is isolating the specific problem and correcting it. In your particular case, you should evaluate and clear one variable at a time rather than being concerned with the switches, tubes, speakers, etc - all at once. It should not have been too difficult to have someone test your tubes rather than waste money on replacements that are probably not needed. Your money would be better spent buying a good multimeter, soldering equipment and other basic tools - and perhaps a few good texts like "Fixing Up Nice Old Radios" by Ed Romney. Just my humble opinion - no offense intended........

Canceled the order for 7 tubes. I think the antenna input just needed to be 'fiddled' with. It is working fine now on AM and FM. It looks like someone added an aftermarket antenna and it just needed fiddiling. Thanks for suggestions.
