Clarion 60 filter caps
1/20/2009 3:18:17 PMAl
I just found a Clarion 60 at an auction and when I got it home to check it large amounts of wax had melted below from the capacitor case on top of the chassis. This cap block is where the filters are located so I'm guessing at a minimum the filter caps are bad and I would like to start there before trying to do anything else. The schematic shows 5 caps as filters, however, only two of them have values of 1.5 and neither are listed as electrolitics. Would it be possible to substite elec. for these two and if so what would be acceptable as far as values? The schematic shows plate voltages in the 300 volt range so I assume they would need to be 450 volts or more. Both of these filters ground to chassis. The other three filter caps are at or below .5 so I'm guessing I would be ok to use regular caps on these? Your thoughts? Thanks for the help. Al

Took a peek at your Clarion radio print. Interesting radio that one is. I like it.

C-15 is 20MFD and your pick of 450VDC is good.
The two 1.5MFD are going to be electrolitic as well. I would say same voltage of 450VDC
The others I would use metallized polyester film ones, the MEF type have a voltage rating of 650, and are small in size. All that should fit back in that can.

C15 is .2 MFD. None of them are electrolytic.

Ooops.. After a better look, Yeah. You are 100% correct.
I guess Grandpa should expand the view more in schematic, and mind sometime.

If you are going to go with original values, all filter caps must be exactly as specified in the schematic. Follow values listed for 60 cycle operation.

If you decide to go with larger caps, you can use 10 MFD units. Omit C15 in that case.

Thanks Thomas for your help and advice and to Warren for responding. The printing on the schematic is very difficult to read. With dual 45s for output this should be a powerful 6 tube radio. Hope I can get it going. Thanks again. Al
