I've been doing some additional research regarding the Ham-1 and here's the tube list and function:
12BE6 converter tube biased at 87V
12BA6 I-F amplifier biased at 87V
12AV6 detector, AVC, A-F amp biased at 87V
5DC5 power amplifer biased at 87V
35W4 rectifier
All tubes have AC filaments
A classic 5 tube superhet?
Herb
Yeah Herb, that a classic AA5 alright. That's a 50C5 though. All miniature 7 pin tubes.
You're right Warren. I fat fingered the keyboard. Surprisingly, this setup was used in a communications receiver. My recollection is that it had sensitivity and image issues.I used the Ham-1 for SWL and as my novice class amateur receiver. It had a BFO and bandspread that actually worked!!

You might like the old Hallicrafters line then. I restore them as a hobby. Right now I have an S-120 I am listening to. This one has the same tube line up, but has a little selenium half wave rectifier in place of a 35W4. The use of a glow bar resistor makes up the difference in the heater string. You still can get the S-38 (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) as there are plenty of them still around. Easy electronics to restore. You can even play around with them, and hod rod them with a few modifications. When you get into the SX models, then it's a bit more complicated.
Hello Warren,
Thanks for the great suggestion!! I'm going to strat shopping for an S-38 tonight. I would like to put together a tube station and the S-38 would be a good starting point. Do you have any suggestions on a good place to pick one up?
The S-120 was VERY similar to the Ham-1 I had way back when. I had a freind that had one and we regularly worked QSO'ed and visited each others shack.
Did you restore your S-120?
Herb WR9H
This S-120 is most all original. I have only replaced the filter capacitors, and put the new ones inside the original card board casing after digging out the old insides. That's about all I have done to it so far.
It's working very good as is. Even has all the original Hallicrafters tubes that test good.
If you would like to have this one to play with, I would sell it to you for what I paid for it $40. My E-mail is posted in this reply. There are lots of the S-38 line listed all the time on eBay. The ones I have got were all from the San Diego Antique Radio Store. I trade with the owner, and got Hallicrafters in sad shape to good shape for $10 to $25. I have restored about 10 of the S-38 line, And 15 of the SX models.
Hello Warren,
Have you received any of my emails?
Herb
No, I have not received any E-Mail from you. I will see If I can send you one.
