GM DELCO AM radio 1971

I recently purchased a 1971 Pontiac Lemans with a original AM radio. It wasn't working when i got it but after fidling wit the ground wire I got it to work. It didn't work for very long. I am now trying to find a schematic to try and track the problem down. Does anyone know where I can find a schematic for a 1971 Delco AM radio, the model number is 12APB1 serial number 1080670. The car was built in Freemont California

Mark: It should be in Sam's Photofact AR-98. Price from Sam's is $22, but you can find the book on eBay from time to time for a few bucks.

Check your local main library. Mine has Sams and Beitman's. You can photocopy what you need. They may also have a factory service manual for your car. It's surprising what they have (or can get) if you ask.

You might just get lucky by taking the covers off. then look for bad solder connections. Years of hot and cold, vibration and all makes the grounds let go. Sounds like that's what it is, being it did play, then quit.

I remember when the 71 GM cars came out. The AM-FM models went to double sided boards and used rivets to carry the circuit from one side through to the other. They never soldered the rivets and within months, the radios became intermittent. Delco offered a kit then which was a bunch of wires to install a small harness to bypass the bad connections. I am not positive if the AM radios had the problem but all te factory AM-FM and AM-FM-stereo radios did. Look for rivets on the board used as feedthru points and try resoldering them.
