Philco 46-1209 (I.F. Transformer) (T1)

Howdy all,

I just got a Philco 46-1209 AM/SW/Phono radio and was able to get some AM reception from it for about 2 days and then NOTHING.. I swapped out the majority of the tubes but noticed that T1 didn't have a set screw in the top for the plunger. when I went to remove the transformer from the chassis. all the shielding crumbled to the bottom. the wire is broken on the 2nd winding and the metal tab that holds the set screw at the top is broken.. also the .01uF wax cap is blown..

Guess my real question would be.. Does anybody know where I can get a 455 KC transformer?

Sounds like it's time to go hunting for a parts chassis. I think what you have there is fairly common type transformer, and should not have that much a problem finding one.

that's what i'm thinking... 455 I.F. transformers shouldn't be to hard to come by.. another question if you don't mind..?

In theory.. would any 455khz Transformer work?? as long as i match the scats for this system? this is an open air can transformer...

There is a differents in 1st & 2nd IF . If you can find the ratio of the windings. You can sub in one of the same.

: Ok.. I should beable to restore this transformer in reality, the only damage is that the tab at the top that holds the slug is broke. (which I can fabricate anything to put there) but the wire going from the 2nd IF is broken.. (it was soldered to a terminal at the top of the transformer where the power coming from 7F8 is soldered. since this hairlike wire has snapped and won't reach.. could i bring a pig tail down from the terminal and solder it to that without messing up the impedence? and/or freq? ...

also the wax .01uF cap is blown.. I can grab any modern cap to put in place..

the tricky part is finding the Shielding to put around the transformer? is there a substitute shielding I can use??

If you can extend a short lead to reach the fine wire, That's fine, won't hurt anything. The shielding you may have to be inventive on. I have used the brass sheeting found in those old cable boxes under the top and bottom covers inside.

Thanks warren.. i'll let you know how it turns out.. I also found a site that has the exact match transformer I need. so i decided I would purchase one and then play around with the bad one for training purposes. haha

I have the same Philco radio/phono and need the same transformer; it smokes. Had any luck finding a 455?
