12/31/2008 8:06:50 AMG. Berg
Any idea where to find 10 strand braded cable ...Or to be more decsriptive..for example..Atwater Kent and others in the earl 20s used 8 strands of wire wraped in brown braided cotton comming out of power packs or battery operated radios. I am looking for 10 strand braided cable..Any ideas who may sell this?? I see many places like Radio Daze and Antiques Radio Electronics sell 8 strand but not 10

www.tubesandmore.com sells an 8 conductor cloth cord with cloth wires. It is very nice. However, be aware that the wires are 20 gauge. I used the cable to replace the original cable in my Majestic 180. First, I don't think that it even had enough conductors for the original set-up (which might not be a concern for you). The original set-up had 5 #27 tubes and 2 #50 tubes, with two filament wires for the 27s, and four for the 50s (two each), and then a B++ wire, a B+ wire, and a B- wire. Aside from wire count, the 20 gauge wire cannot properly power all of those high amperage tubes. It gets very warm and the tubes are dim. Since I cannot afford #50 tubes, I changed the set-up to #45 tubes (power supply was missing, so I could build my new power supply around what I wanted). That simplifies the wiring, and with an extra modification or two, I can feed the entire set of tubes from one filament source. Well, with 8 wires, 3 of which are used for the B supply, I have 5, or, more exactly, 4 to work with. Even with them paired up, they still got too warm. To solve the problem, I also purchased some of AES's larger gauge cloth line cord (which looks incredible, by the way), and used that to power some of the tubes. Now the wiring doesn't get warm, and works just fine.

....So just because they say that their cable can power an Atwater Kent doesn't mean that it actually can. If your set uses all '01As, then the cable will probably work. If it uses a lot of high amperage tubes, you might need to add some extra wire. Having the large gauge cloth line cord strapped next to the 8 conductor cable looks quite acceptable. You can either use large diameter string in a cable-like fashion at certain points, or neatly wrap the two together at three or four key points with friction tape.

.....Of course I didn't see the part in your post where you say that you want a 10 conductor instead of an 8, and that you already looked at Radio Daze and AES.

Well, you might still consider using the large gauge line cord.

Incidently, I did write both companies and asked them why they don't use some larger gauge wires mixed with the small ones. They said that there isn't a demand for that, and custom cables would be very expensive. Whatev's

I'm not familiar with the cable that Radio Daze and Antique Radio Electronics sell. I wonder if the braided cover will expand if you push it together (as to make it shorter). If so you might be able to add a couple of larger wires.

Yah i kind-a thought of all that...I have used A.E.S 8 conductor cord in the past for powering my R.C.A Radiola V..and in electronically restoring my R.C.A Radioal 32..(Wholy crap..don't ask me how i got my Radiola 32 into my house...OMG it is huge and by the way quite rare...
