I have this 1935 Silvertone radio ...Changed out all the caps..Used 22mf electolitics instead of the 8mf..just to see if i could get it going...well i have low B+ only around 125 v.....can't pull in any stations ....and the transformer is very hot to the touch..has a smell too..is the transformer bad???
Thanks Bill

Bill:
Low B+ and hot transformer sounds like short somewhere. Pull the type 84 rectifier tube and watch Mr. Transformer then. If he still gets hot, I might have bad news for you.

If your transformer turns out to be bad, read all wires going in and out for a short to transformer case. Take it apart and you could get lucky and find the short near the top windings.

::: Thanks warren I will do this ... Just a thought I am no expert but if you pull up the schematic can you tell me... are all the high voltage taps 230 volts?
I know two go to the plates of the rectifier and one is the B+...It may sound like a dum question.

Bill,

Each of the plates of the rectifier tube have 230 volts on them. The centertap of that transformer winding connects to the negative of C9 capacitor and the choke on to R12 and R13 to chassis/ground. A negative voltage is developed across R13 and R12 as a result of current flow up thru them from chassis/ground. The voltage developed across R13 is used to provide bias for the 6C5 AVC tube and the 75 first audio tube. The voltage developed across both R12 and R13 provides negative bias on the grid (G1)of the 6F6 audio output tube (-12.5 volts).

Bill,
Might take Warren's advice. I was lucky, but found a short in an Edison 7R couple years ago. Removed and upside down on the bench, it metered fine, but an xtra xformer had been added for the rectifier filaments. After re-installing and right side up, the HV/filament short re-appeared. After unsoldering again and removing the bottom phenolic base, the slight gleam of bare copper caught my eye. Sure enough the two windings were shorting, but only when the weight of the assembly pressed them together against the base plate. Upside down there was no contact. Shrink tubing and repositioning some wires fixed it. Patching the hole for the xtra xformer was a bigger chore, but turned out well with JBWELD, sheet copper and matching paint.

Thanks I will check it out this week..I have two juck sets I picked up at the flea markets last summer..was thinking of adding one of the transformers for that reason ..The heater voltage on them are both 5.0v They had # 80 rectifiers thanks again.

Bill,

If the transformer doesn't get hot with the 84 tube out, then there may be a short in the B+ circuit. Be sure to check the polarity of the caps replacing the two 8 MFD caps. Both the replacement electrolytics' positive leads go to the cathode of the 84. The negative of the first electrolytic C9 goes to the center tap of the power transformer HV winding and the speaker field coil and not directly to ground/chassis. The second power supply electrolytic's negative goes to ground/chassis.

Hey guys one more question I put two caps 22mf elects in as temps this couldn't be causing the low voltage and hot power supply could it?
1/2/2009 11:32:18 PMRadiodoc
Bill,

Does the transformer still get hot and smell with the rectifier tube unpluged? The 22s should be ok as long as their voltage rating is equal to or greater than the original. I would use caps with a voltage rating of 450 volts. Also double check the polarity of the caps and how they are wired. The metal shell of the capacitor is the negative and the insulated end of the capacitor is the positive.

Yes Doc the transformer still gets hot It takes about ten minutes,,Also it smells..I tested for shorts..... both plates to ground ..Doesn't seem to be grounded out there..Only one of the plates had voltage when I fired it up with the tube out ..Guess the wire Is fried inside will take the transformer apart and check it out.
Will let you know what I find
Thanks Doc
