GE E71

Looking for more advice. Working on a GE E71, this is
a multi band with tube compliment 5W4, 6A8, 2 6K7s,
6H6 second detector, 6F5 amplifier and 6F6 output tube.
Set would only put out some really nasty crashing statice
when I got it. Replacing all the caps and resistors,
bridging an open part of a gang resistor with a good
one and replacing the bad 6H6 got it receiving stations.
However, AM is extremely weak and the volume control
has not effect on it, won't amplify or lower the volume.
Shortwave (5.6 - 16 mH) comes in much stronger, but
the volume control still has no effect. Volume control
also has dead spots with a 60 Hz hum. Do I replace the
volume control or should I suspect something else in
the AVC? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Scott,
It seems like the volume control is faulty. You should be able to measure its resistance (marked on the body, about 500,000 ohms) across the two outer terminals. Also the centre terminals resistance should vary to each end as it's rotated. There may be a tap connection for a tone compensation circuit but that won't effect it's basic operation. It might respond to cleaning, squirt some contact cleaner, CRC226, etc inside where the terminals enter and rotate it back and forth a number of times. If this doesn't fix it then it will have to be replaced. You need a logrithmic pot., that is the resistance doesn't vary linearly with rotation. This stops cramping all it's effect at one end for smoother control. Let's know how you get on and I'll advise more if needed. Good luck, Don.
