Radio arrived smashed from eBay
12/22/2008 12:58:10 PMBill G.
Hi All,
Recently I got a beautiful Zenith 6D411 off eBay. This is one of those that has a bakelite chassis.
It arrived smashed. The packing was so poor that the insurance will not pay.
I have opened a dispute on Pay-Pal, but the seller so far has been stuborn. Has anyone on the forum had experience with filing a claim against the seller? I can then use it as a guide as to further steps.

Best Regards,

Bill,
My complaint with an ebay seller was resolved satisfactorily after I contacted him via his personal email, and threatened further contact with ebay. I purchased 4 printed documents (old radios), was charged 4 separate excessive shipping charges totaling $20, but they arrived in one large box full of air. At the USPS media rate, would have been less than $5 for the 4 docs in 1 envelope. In addition, was charged CA sales tax on the shipping fee. HERE'S A NOTE to ebay sellers. I've sold a few things too, but purchased flat cardboard stock, and made custom shipping containers for every item. Some even had glass panels/shelves, and arrived intact. Personally, I WOULDN'T SHIP COTTON BALLS ACROSS TOWN WITH UPS, because of an incident similar to your's. A few of my buyers even made personal email contact with glowing comments about the packing. Sounds like your fight should be directed at the seller first, and then ebay.

If you used Pay Pal they will give ALL your money back to you. Just follow the steps through the process of filing a claim. I had sold through Ebay a Clapp Eastham HR reciever and packaged VERY well..yet it arrived smashed. Buyer filed complaint and I was forced to pay back all ..and goy item back...eventhough it was NOT my fault it got smashed. No matter what if you are a SELLER on Ebay do not ..I repeat do not use Pay Pal system..

You have no choice now on ebay if you are a seller, they force you to use paypal only, new rules. Coincidence, I think not, paypal and ebay are the same company. Just a matter of time before a good lawyer takes ebay and paypal down.

Hi All,
Thank you for the information. I have started a PayPal claim. It seems that is the way to go. The seller seems to be slowly realizing that he packed it badly.
Of course, the radio is what I really wanted, but it is nice to have the money back.

I just sold a radio on eBay and the buyer used a Postal Money Order.
You are right about eBay insisting on PayPal, however, we circumvented this by bypassing the eBay checkout system. When I got the Money Order I just marked it paid and sent him the radio, a beautiful green clock radio from 1957. I kind of hated to see it go. It sounded great, too.

Thank you again for all your help.

Best Regards,
