Abraham Marcus Elements of Radio "Theory"
12/10/2008 8:32:03 PMBob E.
I am about 525 pages into reading it's 750 pages and I am scaring myself with some of the stuff I think I am actually understanding...well to a degree anyway.
My question is: How much of the "Theory" put forth in this book has now changed or has been proven wrong or taken over by another theory since 1947 when this book was written? For the most part I have realized that maybe the section dealing with electrolytics has changed quite a bit with the introducion of new smaller filter caps...But I was curious what some of you who are well versed in this might be able to relate without having to write a book :O)

Anyone care to expound...

As a novice, but learning, I see the book as an A+. yes, (I have a copy also), components change, but the theory remains virtually the same.

My 2 cents.

In my experience, those old fellers had the theory down pretty well, that is to say that the stuff in those old books is still pretty accurate today. The twenties and thirties must have been an interesting time to be in radio.

I also have a copy of A. Marcus's Elements of Radio. I have read it through twice and I'm working on the third! I also have his physics book which is excellent. Does anyone know the life history of Abraham Marcus. I've googled his name but nothing pops up regarding his life.

Bob,
I suggest that basic theory hasn't changed, as is proven by the success of radio and other broadcast mediums. As for the capacitor issue you mentioned, yes new materials/chemistry has significantly altered
their capabilities with more caustic substances, but much better performance when contained properly.

Marv,
It just completely blows me away the way they figured all that "stuff" out.. I was just wondering since that book was written 1947...I did not remember ever reading any new revelations from what they discovered from that point to 50+ years later today to alter their ideas. New applications, components etc. but basic theory is the same...
Therefore I am wondering when does this become fact and lose the theory label :O)
I have stayed up too later again :O)
