Potentiometers - Where To Find Them?

:This darned "ENTER" key. It got me again. I need a 400K volume pot that is switchable. You know, on/off and volume in one package. Looked at all the regular places and can't seem to find one. A 500K pot should work just as well but can't find that either. Has to have a 1-1/2" long shaft and go into a 3/8" mounting hole. Any ideas? Thanks, Johnny

Hi Johnny,

I usually soak the pot with tuner tonic to get the noise out. If that doesn't do it I dismantle it and work on the connections.

I have not had to search for pot since I was a kid. That time it turned out to be a mistake.

Best Regards,

:Hi Bill,
That would work great if I had the original pot. Someone has replaced it with a pot that has no switch and is not the correct value.

:Hi again Bill,
I found a pot in one of my parts chassis that reads 600K from center tap to each outer tap. It meets my needs in all physical aspects. Can I safely use this in place of the 400K that the parts list calls out. Thanks,
Johnny

Hi Johnny,
Yes, give it a try. The physical match is the hard part.
I have found that pots the wrong size can cause the volume adjustment to be jumpy, that is at some point you are too loud or too soft. This close, though, you ought to be OK.

If you have a problem, try a 1.5 meg resistor in parallel.

:Thanks Tom but I tried those places and didn't see anything close to the specs I need. Did I miss something?

I ordered a pot a month or so ago from Mark little costly but it worked. I needed a a 1meg 1/2 watt for volume that was tapped at 1meg, then a 1meg tone control, and on off switch a dual function concenteric control.Email him with your radios model number and I have faith he can make you something. Good luck..

Johnny, Also look in components on the Radio Daze site and then go to Potentiometers. There is a 500 k ohm audio taper listed, that will work for you. Then down below the pots are pot acessories the first item being a switch, that is all you need, there are instructions for mounting the switch on the pot, just follow those instructions. The pot is $1.69 and the switch is $0.79. I did the exact same thing for my 1937 Grunow 589, and it works great, didn't even cut down the shaft.

The shaft is 2 inches, so you may have to shorten it a bit.

Good luck, Doug
