Signal Generator Question
11/21/2008 12:10:21 PMRon
I have a B&K e-2000 signal generator that I have used to align my radios. I also have a Heathkit IM 4110 frequency counter. When I first aquired the frequency counter and hooked up the signal generator is appeared that the signal generator dial was pretty accurate. Recently when I checked the signal output with the frequency counter it was off by at least 100kc. So I am confused on which component is not telling me the truth. Has the Signal generator some how become misaligned or has the frequency counter gone wrong.

To add to my problems I just finished up working on and RCA 86K and went to align it. I first tried by setting the output of the signal generator according to the frequency counter, but when I has done the radio didn't pick up as any stations. Previously it had been working pretty well. So I then set the output according to the dial on the signal generator and realigned. It picks up better, but not to where it was before I started. So I think I have really messed up the alignment uggh! I feel kind of stupid. Can you guys help me out of this?
Thanks,
Ron

Commerical AM stations have to stay within 20 Hz of the assigned frequency, so if you can find out some was to beat the signal generator with a commercial station, that should identify your culprit.

So if i were tune in a strong station say at 1040 and then set my signal gerator at that frequency and feed it into the radio by placing a coil wire near the anttena input it should cancel out the other station and I would hear nothing?? I have read about this procedure before, but I was not sure how it works. How close am I?

Not familiar with the B&K, but if there is a setting for modulated and unmodulated output, are you checking the frequency with an unmodulated signal? With the setup I have, modulating the signal with a test tone throws the frequency counter off. Just something else to check :)

:Looks like the Signal generator is off by that much. I tuned a station in and then used the frequency counter to match the signal and as soon as I came close I could hear it in the speaker. I have since re-aligned the radio with the frequency set by the counter and it is picking up all across the dial! Thanks for the help - Ron
