Nostalgic music radio on AM
11/18/2008 11:02:14 PMVinny
Greetings to all, I am on a dinner break from work and I was playing a recent radio restoration radio to make sure all was OK. AS I was tuning the dial I came across a radio station playing music from the 30's 40's, etc. I was amazed, I live in NY, I thought I was in a time warp and found myself "watching the radio". I have to run back to work but I looked it up on the web and found the web site, perhaps some of you could pick up the stations, it is really nostalgic. At this time they were/are playing on AM 1430. Tuesday 10-11PM so far.

Vinny:
You might try "Pandora Radio" here on the net, I don't what all they play, but you can probably find something to tickle your gizzard there.

Hi All,
I have encountered several of these stations. They are great when you come upon them.
Here in Washington DC, I can get AM740 from Toronto. Recently they changed format a little, but are still the brightest spot on the dial. At night they even play radio dramas and comedies fromt the 40's and 50's.
I can also get WMET here. This is a local staiton with only about 1000 watts, but they play 'sounds of your Life' which is available nation wide, and may be on a station local to you. They have a web site and should list the stations that carry their content.
On Friday evening I can get "Sounds of Sinatra" on WPHT (formerly WCAU) in Philadelphia. However, for a 50,000 watt station their signal is quite weak.
I can almost get WJAS in Pittsburgh at 1320 they play music from the 40's and 50's, too.

I hope you find this helpful. I tend to think that a vintage radio is only a complete work of art when it is playing.

I will check out 1430 this evening to see if the mentioned staiton can be received here.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

Mr. Grimm, I believe the website would show different stations at different times if the week. Perhaps there is one that you coud pick up better then the others, I believe they were broadcasting out of NJ. It was really fascinating, hope this helps.

Greetings,
I have heard one station on FM before on a Sunday evening but nothing like this. I work evenings at a Brooklyn hospital and do not have the opportunity to search for stations as I would love to. At about 2-3 in the AM the reception as you know becomes exponentially better. It is somewhat special to hear these sounds of days gone by out of an AM vintage radio without the stereo sound. There was a day when the US used to be America.

Mr. Linson, thank you, I will try it. I just enjoyed the music coming out of my radio of that era.

I run my Pandora through a small transmitter and listen to it on a vintage radio, you can imagine you are back in "The old days".

Hi Vinny:
This is the (same guy, Danny Stiles) station I listen to late at night while I do my radio bench repairs.. it's what keeps me going and fascinated in this hobby.

You are right that's Danny Stiles.. I've been listening to him since I was 12 years old back in 1955 when he was on WCTC in New Brunswick NJ.

He's in his 80s now!

In fact I'm listening to him RIGHT now at 11:40PM
He's on WNSW 1430-AM right now.

Also as a new gig now he's on afternoons on WDJM 1530-AM !

But he also can be found in NJ on WPAT 930-AM other times of the day and week.

He does another show Saturday nights on WNYC 820-AM out of NY City.

www.dannystiles.com

If it weren't for his constant presence playing this great American standards and Big Band era music from the 20th century.. I don't think I'd enjoy myself doing this as much.

I LOVE listening to that OLD DJ playing OLD music on these old radios.... and it never gets old!
