HEY HI ALL !!! Hats off to those who have succesfully restored a majestic 20!!!...I am currently working on one and gave up..I gave up because I will have to wait till summer time to: 1. melt all the lovely tar out of cap cans. 2. Melt more tar out of cap cans. 3. Try to make more time in reading a "wonderful" schematic. 4. Melt tar our of cap cans..Guess I will have to wait till summer to go outside ...Yes I live in a state where it snows...I love it NOT!!!

G. Berg,
Hang in there, I am waiting for you to do yours so I can benefit from your trials and tribulations before I start mine. You can be my inspiration.

I did the same thing when I first got it. My wife and I went to a radio meet in Indianapolis about five years ago when I was first getting into vintage radios. She said she had to have it and if followed us home. It was too much for me at the time. Several times over the years I got to feeling I was up to the chalange but soon was brought to my knees when trying to figure out the schematic and how the hell to get it apart without damaging the components. I will give credit to the manufacturer-they built it to last!
What measurements do you need? I might be feeling froggy this winter.
Jon.

Hi Jon....Under the chassie is a choke ..It is in a square can (measuring ohh I would say 5" wide and 4"tall and has only two leads comming out that go to lugs on LARGE tar filled block. I put meter to leads and got nothing. I also removed all tar(rock hard and brittle) out of can to reveal the choke. It is wound like a transformer (but has only two leads...The whole mess must weighs close to a pound...ANYWAY ..I don't know what it is on schematic or readings I should get off it. Maybe you can help.

The block you're describing is the filter choke shown between the first two filter caps from the rectifier.
Should read about 600Ù.
Did one of those in a small console cabinet. Was a lot of work, particularly disappointed to have to melt some tar out of the IF cans. Turned out nice. Wish I could find another nearby. Shipping would kill a deal on one of these! Good luck.

Hey thanks...umm I need to replace it any good ideas with what?..Also..mine is the small console (is actually model 22) Ohh hey ..what should the reading be for the small choke ..the one inside the large can with all the caps and transformer..because I took out the little coil (choke) and have a different reading that in schematic

G. Berg, why wait till summer, instead of melting it (tar) out try freezing it and see if you can knock it out. PL

GB,
Here is another suggestion I've made many times, having done it on a Majestic 90B and and Edison 7R, but sure will be ignored. I have an electric oven, so open flame is not a concern. I would suggest the tar inside these cans is a petroleum product, and may emit flammable fumes, if an open flame is there. I removed all phenolic base plates, paper etc up to the bare tar. If you have an electric oven (not microwave)elevate the can above a paper plate with disposable wood blocks, set the oven to 150-200 degrees, turn on the vent fan and walk away for 30 min to an hour. It may take a couple hours for the tar to soften, and spill its guts onto the plate. For gas ovens, your are on your own, or at the mercy of a heat gun and asbestos gloves!!!

I used an electric hot plate outdoors, and set it to warm or medium heat. Set the cap can on an old metal pie plate till the tar softens. You may have to rotate it a few times to distribute the heat. You should be able to pull it out. Might take a little digging with an old screw driver. Yes, do it outdoors! It will smoke some. What's left on the inside of the can be cleaned up with a solvent. After it's all cleaned out, that's a good time to repaint the exterior if needed.

Since that large cap can also houses the interstage transformer and the rf choke, you might want to consider just heating the cap end and removing only enough tar to make room for the new caps.

THANKS FOR ALL THE SUGGESTIONS AND HELP!! To remove the tar out of this very large tar fill block (that has small choke, transformer, and caps) I would like to slowly heat the whole thing up and turn tar into liquid...but not to hot. I really wana get rid of all that tar and weight. Plus..I wana get all that tar off the transformer...ANYWAY...will have to wait till summer and do outside.
