Restoring an Atwater Kent 35 and need some help. I sandblasted the metal cabinet and need to know how to duplicate the leather or crinkle effect that AK used in painting them, Further, from your experience typically what electronic components needs to replaced (other than the tubes)in these radios when restoring them. Finally, do you know of a cost affective source to buy replacement tubes for it, all the tubes were missing when I purchased it. Thanks for your help.
God bless,
Dave B.
For tubes, best to buy used ones. New ones are a waste for such sets. Try AES and RadioDaze.
A common problem with these old TRFs is open interstage audio xfmrs. You can check yours with an ohmmeter. Replacement xfmrs are available from AES and RadioDaze.

I will give it a try, thnaks for the help.

:I have seen suggestions on the crinkle finish, but don't recall the details. You might try Googling. I have several AK cake-box sets, and I left their finish as-is.

I would have suggested not removing the original paint on an AK35. You can buy crinkle paint but won't look exactly like the original. AES sells it but not in the proper color. I make up my own paint for AK using dark brown and lamp black which can be applied over other paint.
AK35 was made to use 01A's but #30 will work if filament is reduced to 2 volts.
The most likely problem with an AK35 is open audio interstage transformers. If open don't throw the original ones away. Insides can be replaced.

Good to hear from you again, thanks for the info, As last year I hope to build the power supply to power up these battery operated radios. Last year you indicated that you might have some or most of the parts to build such a unit. If so I would be interested in buying the parts from you any any instructions you could provide on how to assemble same. Please advise, thank you.
God bless,
Dave B.
Decide what circuit and voltages you want. Search around for parts. Let me know what you don't have. I have lots of parts and can look for what you don't find.

Thank you, but as a newbie I don't know what circuit or voltage I want. I have an Atwater Kent model 35 and a Majestic 5, I would immagin that there are two or three voltages in these radios. Further, what type should I build and instruston to build same. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited. Where can I buy the transformer for it and what voltages should it be? Thanks for the help.
Regards,
Dave

An Atwater Kent will operate on 5 volts, or a little more @ 1.5 amps if you use 01A's. For 30's only need 2 volts at 1/4 amp.
Then you need a B supply around 90 volts. You can make the detector voltage from this. C supply doesn't have to be much as no current is drawn.
An AES, www.tubesandmore.com , power supply kit may be the best if you aren't sure what's needed and have nothing to start with.

Advance Auto Parts stocks a wrinkle paint in spray cans. It's not cheap and takes some skill to get a good job, but it looks nice.

Thank you I appreciate it. I tried using a brown Krylon paint and put it in the oven for and hour at 475/turbo bake. It went in looking like a wet brown loaf cake and came out looking a dry brown loaf cake, no crinkles. House stunk so bad I had to open the windows for hours, it was 33 that day. Heat does not affect it, further it was cold out that day so with a mitt I took it out side and set it in the cold for an hour, no crinkle. The crinkle is in the paint, not the process. I'll look into the paint at Advanced Auto. Any ideas where to buy an inexpensive power supply to run the radio? Again, thanks.

To save time rounding up parts check AES, www.tubesandmore.com kit #K-101A. May not be the best looking but works and sells for $53.95.
