Philco 89
11/15/2008 9:51:39 AMgregg ruecker
I have just started to restore a Philco #89 code 123. I would welcome any tips or thoughts on getting this project going, it's going to be a long one as it is in bad shape. My first real question is with the filter caps. 6 mfd caps are not readily availble. Can I replace them each with a 10 mfd?

Thanks,

Gregg Ruecker

The copy of the Philco "Caps & Condensers" I can send your for $10.00 plus $3.00 S&H let me know if still interested. This info is 100% worth it if you restore old Philco radios with tar filled caps (both the large multi section tin cans and small black bakelight tar filled wax paper caps)....Also covers color code for dog bone resisstors and gives 100s of code numbers and schematics on how to pull out tar and replace with new caps inside of shells..I think it is 40-50 pgs...I bought this and sell copies to members in my local club...WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD!! I use it all the time.

Gregg, please don't judge from the ruckus going on but philcorepairbench.com has a lot of information on Philco sets, including an article on working with the cap blocks and values in them. All is free you just have to dig it out. Also available is a packet for which you have to pay a minimum fee that will give you schematics, service bulletins, alignment procedures etc. Check it out, great for Philco repairs. PL
