Hi, has anybody built one of these little AM transmitters. It looks pretty neat was wondering if they work good. You can check it out at http://antiqueradio.org/transmitter.htm
Thanks, George T

If you will look back a couple of years in this site, we had quite a discussion about the Li'l 7.

George: I'll second Adam's recommendation unless you don't want a solid state kit. The SStran model AMT3000 works great and allows you to adjust the gain, modulation, and compression for the best sounding audio. Check it out at: http://www.sstran.com/.

I, too, have built an sstran. Good results. You'll need your bifocals when you assemble it, though! Had some problems with hum/buzzing and had to do some detective work to track it down. Various electronic devices that don't affect external radio stations find a way to infect the signal. The owner of the company sent me a very detailed explanation of how this happens and ways to correct it. I'm quite satisfied. Most of the neighborhood can pick up the signal! Mark from Kalamazoo

For a more 1930's/40's style AM transmitter, you can look up the 3 tube AM transmitter on this site. It uses 2 6j5's and a 6sa7, works pretty good and is very adjustable. I built a nice solid oak box for mine and it looks great.

Mark,
Is that good that most of the neighborhood can receive it? Are there any complaints? Is it on top any other local and popular station? Is it within FCC limits as to power input at the final? Just curious, and not trying fault your project.

It has very sharp broadcasting,(needs a selective radio) but repeats every 455kc, but will cover up other stations if at the same frequency. It is weak enough to not transmit very far away from the antenna ?40ft? Again it is fully adjustable to any frequency, although it can take a while to align all trimmers.

Marv: There is an antenna modification you can make to increase the distance the signal will travel, but the instructions make clear that doing this could result in problems with the FCC. I have not done any fancy antenna - just a long wire. In my car, I can pick it up for about a half block fairly well. I am not interfering with any local stations, so I don't think anyone is bothered. However, I'm not sure if they would know who is responsible! :-) So few people tune into AM anymore, so I am not concerned. Mark from Kalamazoo

Well I looked at the spec's for the SSTrans and it looked like what the doctor ordered. I went ahead and ordered one and will be cleaning my bifocal shortly. I see where you can make an antenna for it and send a signal up to two miles. I don't know if that is legal or not but it sounds pretty good to me. They said something about radio is probably going to go digital in the near future and we will need one of these to listen to our antique radios. Hopefully they won't pass a fairness doctorine also, that would sure knock out a lot of broadcast. Well I guess I'll get my Ada Jones cd out it will be fun listening to her on my Zaney Gill. Thank You All Again, you guys are more help than you could ever imagine. George T. and yes I do wear bifocals.
