Aquadag

What material can be used to replace the aquadag coating on older tv crt's? As I understand it, the aquadag coating on the outside of the tube acts like a capacitor, providing high voltage filtering. Is it really necessary? I have a 12LP4 where the aquadag has flaked off.

Hi

Not all TV picture tubes had this coating.. Some TV's used 500mmf 20KV caps to filter high voltage. You could add a cap..

Be sure any remaining coating is grounded. There are conductive paints if you would like to repair the coating. Try Loctite Rear Window Defogger Repair Kit. (Used to repair the back window defogger in cars.)

Aquadag is what the name implies, a mixture of water and graphite.
Generally a bonding material was added such as what "Elmer's glue" is made of. So I've been told, a small amount of silver oxide was added to this mix, considering that it increases the conductivity. Hope this helps.

You are in luck, and Paul is right, go to your distributor, ask for Philips ECG Catalog ET-2188 and ET-2552, they have all kinds of chemicals and sprays for the electronics industry. Once again, hope this helps.
