Are you sure you don't have any dry joints in your decoupling capacitors?
:::Hi all..I faithfully recapped a Wells Gardner 6-A chassie and get a hissing/high pitched sound. I tried to adjust all trimers...but no luck....In Wells Gardner lit..it mentions to have antenna lead coated with braided wire..tryed that ..no luck.....Also I replaced .25 caps with .22 could that be it? ...Also tested all resistors..they check out good...Or is it something else.....THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS

:For Christmas I'll be bringing you a nice shiny book by Marcus & Levy called "Elements of Radio Servicing". After you read it you will hopefully understand how a radio works and then you won't have to do "shotgun" repairs where you replace every capacitor and twiddle every adjustment hoping it will make the radio work.

As far as your "hiss" problem and the suggestions given:
.. I'm sure he's referring to "cold" solder joints at C-7 or C-5 which are RF bypass caps. They are supposed to remove and residual RF from the (IF) carrier prior to audio amplification.
If you haven't replaced them you might want to. They are usually Mica caps and don't typically fail.. but they can fail and are cheap to replace.

No justification whatsoever for such a response. If we were all pros instead of hobbyists there would be a lot fewer of us that come to this site for wisdom. I don't think anyone expects sarcasm as a response. There have been a couple of postings and responses lately that do not do this site the respect that it rightly deserves. Enough said!

I always appreciate a good book ref. I have ordered the book from Amazon.com. Thanks for the tip. -Shane.
You most probably have an open...cap or resistor? The hissing sound is associated with open "old" carbon resistors. Reading good is not the test, it's a guide. Operation is. Too an open at bad joint at electroytics and other caps are causes. How long do you let it hiss, a electroytic could be cooking. Even an open back at antenna area. My bet is you have an open in one of the old resistors. Voltage readings are very helpful. But you can try this. I would turn set on and use an insulated something to hook around each old resistor and pull on it. Hopefully one will break apart.
