:Hello:
:
: I have this S-38B with a 6AK5 front end added to it. Has also A transformer, with all 6 volt tubes and full wave Diode power supply. There is a 3rd control in the front that really seems to be a RF gain, and when in CW mode puts out a heck of a BFO beat. I have replaced the filter caps with 100MFD, two 47MFD at 350VDC, and the 20 MFD at 35VDC. The 220 ohm and 1K resistors in power supply get hot even with 1 watt resistors. Plate on output tube (6K6) now is just over 200 volts. has a filter choke in the botton base of what was the 35Z5. This radio is a real hot rod. Pulls is AM & SW and hams ssb with just a long wire. I was wondering if this was some kind of "kit" modification? or did some old radio guy come up with this?
Check out Brian Ripley K8BR's S-38 website at: http://www.the-s38-guy.com/. Sounds like your radio has had some really serious mods done if all the 12 volt tubes have been replaced with 6v tubes. I'm not aware of any mod kits that did this.
