Philco Mod 46-427 ~ Choke questions
10/11/2008 11:43:49 PMGeorge T
Hi, I have 2 caps that are wrapped with wire on this 46-427. If I replace the caps do I still need to have the choke in line? I cut the old cap out of the circuit and connected the new cap. It's hooked up the same way just the new cap isn't wrapped, it is wrapped around the old cap in the circuit. Will that work? Thanks, George.

I think that is a wave trap to filter out maritime signals that used to be around the same frequency as the IF.

Geo/Rob,
Found a similar component B- to chassis in a Philco 48-460. Riders docs called it series resonant at approx. 455kc, the IF freq. Don't know if maritime radio used that freq.

Maritime radio used to be about the 500kHz range

Hi George

Replace the cap leaving off turns of wire. You don't need this choke. It was supposed to be a wave trap helping to remove signals below the broadcast band.

Other than Philco few manufacturers used this idea. Probably something they figured by the book. I haven't found these turns of wire to do anything.
