Adding built-in antenna to farm radio
10/8/2008 3:49:57 PMjim
Hello everyone in forum land, This my first query so forgive me if its not in proper order. I would like to add abuilt in antenna to a Sentinel 175B. Now u thinking why would a person want to do that. Well not every "Tom", Dick" or "Harry" has an antenna strung up in the trees and does not want to do so. And, furthermore, I want to play radio in different rooms of my home and its hard to sell these if buyer can not hear them play. Fellers, it will take me a while to get back to your coments. Usually only on computer early in the morning and late at night

Jim: one idea is to staple multiple turns of wire inside the cabinet, and connect one end to the antenna terminal.

Just draping a wire on the floor behind furniture might work too. A ground will help, too.

Jim/Doug,
I restored an RCA 86BK battery only farm type a couple months ago, and had the same idea. I stapled a two turn loop inside the cabinet, and got poor results. Here is my best suggestion. Find an area inside the cabinet that will readily accept a loop arrangement. With accurate dimensions wind a multi turn loop on a form that'll fit these dimensions. Try it before removing from the form and record results. Add/subtract turns or make a primary secondary arrangement, and test until results are acceptable. Rigidize the loop with tape/glue etc in order to remove from form and place inside cabinet.

:Thanks a lot fellows. I have stapled several turns of magnet wire inside the cabinet or under cabinet. Has worked fair on some radios. Our local AM station is only 5,000 watts and in these mountains will not receive in parts of county. Will await other suggestions Thanks again

I think that, for any good results, you are going to need more antenna than you can staple around the inside of the radio, perhaps even an outside antenna.

If you have a forced air type heating system in your house...the metal duct work that runs though-out the house works as a good antenna...Just run antenna wire from radio to heat register

Thanks a lot men for your imput and ideas. Darn it, there bound to be a way to do this. Got problem half figured out-------one wire of built in ant. goes to stator [biggest one ]of tuning condenser, that should be capactor now I think, Problem is where other lead connects to. Of course the ant. coil has to be disconnected. I have used alumium frame of storm windows as a antenna also

Jim, you don't disconnect the antenna coil. The problem could be the antenna coil. Since your interest is in selling, here's what I would do. Forget the loop antenna. It didn't come with one. Hook about 12 to 20 feet of wire as schematic indicates, this becomes the blue wire hook-up shown on schematic going to terminal A. It must connect there. Open the connection between blue wire and the gang condenser. Forget the ground (black) lead to earth ground. Your buyer gets radio with long wire antenna attached which is intent when sold, slightly modified, that is shorter. You don't necessary need a real long wire strung up in the trees. You may live in a tough reception area. Not much on AM anyway, try night time. Weren't as many stations back then and they would sell a long wire antenna to buyer. If it doesn't work with the long wire hooked as schematc indicates somethiong else is wrong.

:Thanks guys, Now to u Bill, I am in Va also and someone correct me if I am wrong, there is NO ant.coil in an AA5 radio-----the built in ant. serves as a ant coil !!!! I have radi playing fairly good with ant. from a GE 3 way radi plus about 8 ft. of wire added on. But will connect ant. coil back up as original and se what up doc. By the way my home built 70 or so years ago with oil furnace and I don't thing no duct work but metal would stand up

GODAR makes a small loop antenna just for that purpose.. use one in my GE K55.....Look up at Antique Electronic Supply..about $25...It works fairly well, but is no subsitute for a well grounded long wire rig..
