Radiola 18 Dial Drive

OK:

The radio works great now, but....

The dial drive ( which has a steel (?) cord wrapped around a capacitor drive pulley ) has snapped since the drive assy was very taut.

Does someone market the drive cable as an assy itself?

I also have no real explanation as to why the drive assy is so tight ( hard to turn). I have lubricated it a number of times with no real results. It could be that the pot metal drive pully on the capacitor shaft has slightly expanded over the years and caused the bearing near it to be very tight. Maybe?

The pot metal drive pulley is cracked in a number of places. I have had the drive cord fail on another Radiola 33 as well for the same reason (hard to turn).

Thanks
Lou

Hey hi ..at your local hardware store you can find picture hanginf wire..thin steel cable..identical to what was original...I have had the same problem with many radios that use steel cable for a dial drive "belt" Yes the pot metal warps making it hard to turn. ALSO...check set screws to make sure they are not turned in to far....:

Thanks all for your great inputs

Looks like I have a little work to do on the dial drive.

The article below was excellent.
