Zenith 8-S-463 (5808 chassis) wave magnet substitute
9/28/2008 11:43:05 AMRoy Sharp
Help … I have a 5808 chassis out of a Zenith 8-S-463 console, however I do not have the wave magnet antenna. The wave magnet is still in the console cabinet at a friend’s home in another state.
Can I attach a long substitute antenna wire to the chassis in order to receive stations?
If so, where do I attach the wire (or wires)? The wave magnet antenna had a 5 wire plug in connector.
Thanks,
Roy

Hi Roy: Yes you can attach a long wire to the antenna terminal screw on the back of your chassis. On the back of the chassis you will find 2 screw terminals marked A (antenna) and G (ground). The wave magnet unit is normally for AM broadcast reception, and the short wave bands use a long wire attached to the A terminal. The band selector switch normally switches between the two, and I believe there may also be a switch on the wave magnet unit too for selecting distant and local reception. You should be able to receive all your local AM stations with a long wire attached.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply regarding an antenna wire. However there are not any "A" or "G" screw terminals on the chassis. The only items on the rear of the chassis are:
A 5-pin socket for the wave magnet.
A 5-pin socket for the speaker.
A switch to switch from "Television" to "Radio".
Are there any other solutions?

Ah, I see your problem. On that model and many others the A and G screw terminals are actually on the wave magnet itself. The Wave Magnet does work on SW bands, but a long wire is usually better. You might try a temporary connection to the band selector switch or control grid of the 1232 RF tube, but you may not be able to do an accurate alignment since the alignment procedure assumes the Wave Magnet antenna is attached (but in the distant position).

Steve...It works!!! A long antenna wire attached to the control grid of the 1232 RF tube enables me to receive AM stations. Now I have to eliminate the hum (hopefully just a filter cap). The alignment will have to wait until I can reinstall the Wave Magnet... A vacation to Kansas awaits.
Many thanks for your help.
