You mention there is AF signal at the plate of the 76 but not on the grid of the output tube. Try bypassing cap 11Y, with another cap, which couples the plate of the 76 to the grid of the 6B5.
The supressor and cathode voltage on the 6D6 are dependent on the volume control setting.

Norm,
Even though the 11Z cap tested good, I changed it out like
you said. I rerouted the 11Z cap directly from the detector
plate to the output grid, even though originally it went
to ground and connected with 11Y. That fixed it. Maybe I
didn't have a connection between the two caps before.
Thanks for all your help, this was a great learning experience.
Next up, a GE 71 that didn't work when I got it. Puts out
alot of static though. By the way, any suggestions on what
to look for in an oscilloscope for this kind of servicing?
Thanks again.

Hi Scott,
It's great that you finally got your crosley going well, I'm sure you wondered if it would ever talk. However you have learned a lot more from chasing s difficult series of faults like this and they will get easier. You mentioned that you connected capacitor 11Z across 11Y instead of from the 76 plate to ground. This is a small capacitor (0.001 mF) which bypasses the RF signals but allows the audio to pass. It filters out any RF from the output stage and will also rduce the higher audio frequencies. I suggest you reconnect this back as per the schematic. You ask about an oscilloscope for testing these radios and as an old TV technician Im used to using a scope but they're not really essential for radios. If you want to get one any recent 'scope with a frequency response of a few mHz and a sensitivity of about 10 mV or so will be fine. A devide by 10 probe is usefull as they have a much lower input capacitance and won't affect the tuning of any tuned circuits you are looking at so much. There are many good CRO's at club swap meets and auctions if you don't want to buy a new one. Be carefull of live chassis, it's a good idea to have an isolation transformer when workink on them for safety. If you don't isolate the set you can shourt the mains out through any grounded test equipment such as a CRO.
Norm,
Just to clarify, don't think you saw my correction on the 515.
I didn't change the circuit, I just made it look physically
like the schematic. I moved the 11Y directly from the plate of
the 76 to the grid of the output. The 11Z still goes from 76
plate to ground. Originally, the 11Z went from the plate to
the ground lug where it connected with 11Y, I couldn't get it
to work that way when I replaced the caps. Although not
as neat as the original wiring, it's still schematically correct.
Someday I'll try to put it back the way it was.
On the scope, I've got an old Heathkit CRO that was given
to me. Recurrent sweep type with a requency response to 5 mHz and
sensitivity is 30 mV. Works o.k., but can't always freeze the trace
and probably need to get a 10X probe. I do use an an isolation
transformer on live chassis.

Hi Scott,
Sorry for the confussion, it sounded like you had connected 11Z in parallel with 11Y, you obviously have it correct. The Heathkit CRO should be fine for any radio work, you can check distortion and use it to signal trace if necessary. I think it must have a fault if it's not triggering well, my experience with Heathkit equipment is that they work well. Some of these scopes also have different triggering modes available to allow solid locking on TV horizontal and vertical signals as well as normal triggering. If it's on the wrong setting this can make it unsteady. Do you have a schematic for the CRO? Whoever gave it to you may have built it themselves and they come with excellent schematics and construction; operation details. It's possible that when it was assembled there was a small wiring mistake, that's very easy to do when building a kit. If you can't get the instruction book post a request on this site, they were very popular and I,m sure someone will be able to help with one. Norm and I are not sure if we've got a schematic for your GE71. I've got a schematic for a GE H71 which is equivalent to RCA Radiola models 80, 82 & 86. This is a superhet and uses a 224 RF amp., 227 osc., 224 1st. det.(mixer), 224 1st. IF amp., 224 2nd. IF amp., 227 2nd. det.(AF detector), two 245 push pull output, and 280 rectifier. Does this sound likeyourset? If not can you list the tube line-up please and we'll try and help you get it going. I think Norm has a couple of other GE71 schematics with different letter prefixes. After the Crosley it should be a piece of cake. Try checking the usuall things first such as filter (electrolytic) and paper capacitors and let us know how you're going. Good luck, Don.

Hi Don,
The Heathkit CRO is a recurrent sweep whether that makes any
difference or not. Its got vertical settings for DC X1, X10, X100
the same for AC and a gain control, and horizontal settings for 10,
100, 1K, 10K, 100K, 500K and EXT IN and a gain control. Other
knobs control frequency vernier, horiz and vert position, intensity
and focus, int/ext sync and there's vertical, horizontal, two grounds,
ext sync and IV PP input jacks. The op instructions with
it aren't the best, but I'm pretty clear on most of it. I calibrated
it according to the instructions after locating an open resistor in
the horizontal section that caused it to go bad and end up in my
hands. But using it on a normally functioning Setchell Carlson superhet,
I couldn't freeze the wave patterns past the mixer stage. I'll go thru
the schematic and check the circuits. I'd like to use this scope since
the price is right, but I'm being tempted by a great price on a
recondition Tektronics that is way more than I need. Enough of that.
The GE is an E-71, uses a 6A8 converter/osc, 6K7s for 1st and 2nd IF AMPs,
a 6H6 detector and AVC, a 6F5 audio AMP, a 6F6 output and
a 5W4 rectifier. Tubes all test good, I've already replaced all the caps
which didn't improve anything. Signal injected at the volume control is
heard, so I'll be checking out the front end. I'll be in touch, really
appreciate all the info.

: : SERIOUSLY NO SCAMS! LOTS OF CASH, FAST AND COMPLETELY
: : LEGAL,
: : THIS REALLY WORKS!!
: : THIS REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WORKS!!! BUT
: : YOU
: : HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO A
: : LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!! A little while back, I was
: : browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and
: : came across an article similar to this that said you could
: : make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial
: : investment of $6.00! So I thought," Yeah, right, this must
: : be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept
: : reading. Anyway, it said that you send $5.00 to each of
: : the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place
: : your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6,
: : and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are
: : thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it
: : over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying
: : it. I
: : figured what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $30.00,
: : right? Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little
: : worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it
: : out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they
: : confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I invested the
: : measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started
: : getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it
: : would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first
: : week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I
: : had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I
: : had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my
: : fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00
: : and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth
: : $30.00, and 6 stamps. Let me tell you how this works and most
: : importantly, why it works....also, make sure you print a
: : copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of
: : it as you need it.
: : STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper
: : and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE
: : PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $5.00 bills and
: : place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of
: : paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope to
: : prevent thievery. Next, place one paper in each of the 6
: : envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed
: : envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above
: : phrase, your name and address, and a $5.00 bill. What you
: : are doing is creating a service by this. THIS IS
: : ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following
: : addresses:
: : #1) Trina, 5212 Coach Drive, Richmond, CA 94803
: : $2) Brittany, 17 Corrine Place, Key Largo, FL 33037
: : #3) Jeremy Reid, 1619 E. 11, Winfield, KS 67156
: : #4) Bryan Wax, 1739 A Ave, Emerson, IA 51533
: : #5) Mike Peplow 3756 S. GoldRdige Dr., Magna, UT 84044
: : #6) Joe Arenas, 1600 malibu Carrollton, TX 75006
: : STEP 2: Now take the #1
: : name off the list that you see above, move the
: : other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add
: : YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 3: Change
: : anything you need to, but try to keep this article as
: : close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at
: : least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000
: : groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you
: : post, the more money you make!
: : DIRECTIONS ---HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS
: : Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own
: : posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and
: : drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and
: : select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter
: : into the computers memory.
: : Step 2) Open a blank "notepad" file under accessories in windows
: : and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select
: : 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so
: : that you can add your name to the list.
: : Step 3) Save your new
: : notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in
: : different sittings, you'll always have this file to go
: : back to.
: : Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try
: : searching
: : for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards,
: : chat sites, discussions.)
: : Step 5) Visit these message boards
: : and post this article as a new message by highlighting the
: : text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill
: : in
: : the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as
: : they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group,
: : click the post message button.
: : You're done with your first
: : one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is
: : jump to different newsgroupes and post away, after you get
: : the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each
: : newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN,
: : THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL
: : MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it!
: : You will begin reciving money from
: : around the world within days! You may eventually want to
: : rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will
: : receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a
: : name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST
: : MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.** Now the WHY
: : part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive
: : only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $25.00
: : with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5
: : persons who just sent me $5.00 make the MINIMUM 200
: : postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons
: : respond to each of the original 5, that is another $125.00
: : for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with
: : my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an
: : additional $3125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and
: : post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5
: : replies each, I will make an additional $78125.00! OK,
: : now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a
: : MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each
: : only receive 5 replies, that just made me $1,953,125.00!!!
: : Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200
: : newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per
: : 200 newsgroups react I will receive $48,828,125,00! With a
: : original investment of only $30.00! AMAZING! When your name
: : is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting
: : in the newsgroups, and send out another $30.00 to names on
: : the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start
: : posting again. The thing to remember is, do you realize
: : that thousands of people all over the world are joining the
: : internet and reading these articles everyday, JUST LIKE
: : YOU are now!!
