Dial light
8/24/2008 2:33:14 PMVinny
I am working on a GE 114w, this radio has no dial light. Is there any way to install a dial light?
Can a seperate transformer be built into the AC power line to power a light?

:In my experience dial lamps are usually powered by the heater voltage on the tubes but in your case your heater voltages run around 35 volts. I don't know of a lamp that fits that spec. You could use a type T4, NE45 lamp that is 105-125 volts and come off of your power switch. This bulb however has a current rating of .002 amps.

You could add a transformer but it takes room. How about a lamp and cap in series with the AC line? Probably need Zener diodes so lamp doesn't flash at turn on.

Your radio already has a 35Z5 rectifier. It's made to operate a lamp but requires a little wiring change.

Remove resistor R9 (22 ohms) from pin #2. Connect it to pin #3 instead. Add a #47 lamp between pins #2 and #3. That's a simple change making your GE like other radios with a dial lamp.

Norm, as I was trying to move the resistor it cracked...it's r9 @22ohm and 1/2 watt..I want to order one but do not know the wattage or what type to buy?

Hi Vinny

In another thread someone mentioned Radio Shack has them. If you don't have a Radio Shack nearby email you address. Something like that I can send in an envelope.

Norm, I purchased the resistor at radio shack. Is there a certain direction direction that they go. I would assume they match the same with the red lines on the 5th. pin to the left where the other one was?

In another thread someone mentioned resistors don't have polarity. I'll post it here also. Stripes only indicate value.

Vinny: That set uses a 35Z5 rectifier, which has a lamp tap on the filament - the tap is unused on your model.

You should measure about 7.5 V between pins 2 and 3. With a #40 or #47 lamp, that voltage will drop to about 5.5 V, enough for the lamp.

Doug, thank you for replying.
I am waiting to get and install a cord so I cannot check for voltage. When you say tap I believe you mean the terminal from the tube socket underneath the chassis?
Pins (under the chassis)from the socket #'s 1 and 3 are open with no connections. Pins 2 and 3 have polarity. So when I get the cord you want me to test voltage (I believe that would be DC)between 2 qnd 3?

7 and 2 also check for polarity (I believe that is the heater (Cathode).
Would adding a bulb and bulb socket stress the radio circuits?

Vinny, do what Norm says - now and always!

But No, it won't hurt your radio.

Vinny, look at the schematic for a G. E. model 119. That's almost the same radio with a pilot light.
