Need Help With Band Switch Question "Please"
8/13/2008 10:41:06 PMJohnny
Thanks to all the good convincing I've decided to save the Packard Bell 771. In order to do this I am going to have to rewire it from scratch. On the schematic there is a note that says "Band Switch In Standard Broadcast Position". Does this mean that the wiring shown is just for that position or is the wiring shown the way the radio is wired regardless of what position the band switch is in? I know, simple subject for most of you but I'm still learning. Thank you!

That should be just how the contacts are shown on the diagram for the switch. Wiring is as shown on the schematic but the internal contacts rotate to make the different connections required for operation.

:I kind of thought that. Thank you for clarifying it for me.

Johnny,
My Philco 42-350 had a 4 stack wafer rotary sw. diagram also. The Riders diagram stated as viewed from the rear and in position #1, but didn't state that the chassis would be upside down and contact numbering (#1) would actually start at the top when inverted (11 o'clock) and rotate CCW for 1-12 positions. So be careful. The silver plated sw. contacts were severly oxidized, so complete cleaning and lubrication was necessary, requiring removal. After removal, cleaning and close attention to original positions, made a detailed sketch of the 4 wafers, both front and back wipers and the contacts, which was priceless when I rewired it. I started color coding each end of each wire as I removed it, but ran out of contrasting colors before I got all the wires off. Plus there were 14 notes about special wire routing. Its done, works great, but what a trip.

:Thanks Marv! Good info. I have a 46-480 Philco that I had to remove the band switch on. WOW! What a chore. I've got this Packard Bell figured out now but yes, the pic on the schematic is reverse of what you're actually looking at in the radio.
