Does Anyone Know Zenith 10-S-668 Operation?

Okay! Are you ready for this one? My Zenith 10S668 (10S699 on NA schematic list) is way out of wack. I've performed all the usual repairs. Recap etc. This radio has the Z-Wheel that operates the band selector switch. With the switch full CCW it is in the 1.6 MC to 5.0 MC range and the white arrows point to this range on the dial face. I'm picking up all my AM stations when in this position. The next position CW puts the white arrows on the dial face in the 6 MC to 18 MC range and I pick up nothing here. The next position CW puts the white arrows on the dial face in the 550 MC to 1600 MC range and this is where I "SHOULD" be picking up my AM stations but nothing is there. The next position CW puts the white arrows on the dial face in the "AUTOMATIC" or pushbutton mode and I haven't messed with the pushbuttons yet except to engage one or two of them and all I get is real bad humming or static. I have not tried to adjust these in the normal manner of adjustment.

With the tuning capacitor almost fully meshed I am receiving the 1550KHz local station. White arrows on dial face in 1.6MHz to 5.0MHZ range. When I turn the tuning capacitor in the opposite direction to say, 1260MHz the actual pointer on the dial face, which is driven directly from the tuning capacitor shaft, rotates clockwise to a higher number rather than to a lower number. This is driving me crazy.

I hope this has all made sense and someone can help me figure this out. It's almost as if something electronically has flip-flopped. Can a radio be so far out of alignment to cause this? I didn't change anything from the time I got this radio except caps, power cord and two wires that had really bad insulation. If you can... Please give me any input you may have. Thanks!!!

Is it possible that this is a mechanical problem with the dial/bandswitch linkage? Does this radio have the single round dial with the indicator-window to tell you what band-scale you are on? I bought an owners manual for my 9-S-367 (with the shutter-leaf style dials that change with the bandswitch) from Alan Jesperson and it cleared up a lot of questions that I had about it's operation (i.e.- the pushbuttons). The oscillator section may be having trouble tracking on the higher frequencies (18 mc-daytime) try to see if it hears a signal generator tone or try a substitute tube if avalible. This is a nice radio.

:Thanks Walt. I went back to basics and decided to ignore the problem all together and just do an AM alignment from the 550KHz-1600KHz range on the dial. This thing was really messed up. I was able to bring it into alignment and the radio is working great now. Thanks again!

Hey hi... you asked me about grille cloth for this radio...I am not exactly sure which cloth it used...try Alen Jesperson at GREAT NORTHERN ANTIQUES IN MN HE SPECIALIZES IN Zenith
