Magestic Model 50

Hi lads.

My present project is a Magestic Model 50. It is somewhat deaf and very low volume. Any help please would be appreciated,

many thanks Frank. Doncaster England.

Your radio is transformer power driven. It is vitally important to put the filter capacitors in and of nearly the right capacitance and voltage. The old ones would not be safe to justify leaving in the radio. And if they short to chassis the transformer will 'smoke' your house by getting hot. Your wife would not be a happy woman with the house full of smoke from the burned tar of that old transformer. You should be able to find a schematic in the 'Resources' section here. Good luck.

Frank: here's the schematic: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/992/M0039992.pdf Since the set is working, after a fashion, there isn't anything too major wrong. This will be a good sounding, early superhet with two 45s in push-pull. But the volume control scheme isn't ideal. Unlike later superhets, this one has a separate oscillator and mixer.

What have you done so far? Do you have a decent antenna connected?

First, I would check all the voltages against the table on the schematic. If any of the voltages are significantly out of line, then troubleshoot in a systematic manner. Make sure tube pins and sockets are clean.

Then replace caps, one by one, making sure you haven't introduced a new problem. Check all resistors, and replace any that are more than, say, 25% off - again, checking operation after each one is replaced.

Many thanks both for the help.

I have a good aerial in place - so since you think the problem should be easy to overcome in the 'step by step' way you suggest I will take this route.

Again. Many thanks

The filters should definitely be replaced in this set. The Majestic Model 50 is a very attractive set, but the chassis is the very deuce to work on!

There are a couple of bypass condensers that tend to leak which are concealed in the UF cnas, which are RIVETED to the chassis.

good luck!
