Zenith 6G001Y Universal

Hi gang!

Just purchased an old 6G001Y Universal.
Requires lots of TLC.

Want your thought on this set.

Was this a pre Trans-Oceanic?

Thanks!

Mark: that Universal model came out in 1946. Trans-Oceanics were introduced pre-war and continued into the '80s if you include transistorized sets.

The styling of your Universal is somewhat reminiscent of T/Os, but it's a different animal. Broadcast band only, fewer tubes.

Thanks Doug!

Would you say this is a pretty good set?

Mark: Yes. It was advertised as a take-it-to-the-beach portable, with a 20s-something lady in a one-piece swimsuit, and a 20s-something guy tuning the radio with one hand, and an arm over the lady's shoulder. The guy seems to be of the age just recently back from the war - probably Zenith's target market at the time.

Seriously, it will be a good set - with nice selectivity and sensitivity. Good luck.

T/0s of this same vintage might have been more geared toward what we now call "geeks" or guys with extra money to spend.

They show a bomber T/O on the table where Donald Duck lands on Alcapulco Beach in the movie "The Three Caballeros." The ladies evidently were having a beach-side listen before being rudely interupted by the 'wolf in duck's clothings'.
