Lots Of Vacuum Tubes
7/15/2008 11:11:02 PMJohnny
I just purchased the first of twelve boxes of tubes from a fellow who inherited them from an old radio man that passed away. There's approximately 400 various tubes. Today I needed 2 6J5's and 2 6V6's. About $75 new through Antique Elect. or Radio Daze. I looked in the tubes and I have at least 6 of each and all test good. If someone needs a tube or two let me know and I'll see if I have it. I will test it before I send it. I don't know if there's anything rare there but I haven't done a thorough inventory. I'll start that tomorrow. The fellow is holding the other eleven boxes for me and I will get them as I can afford them. He also inherited dozens of radios. I haven't seen them all yet but I did buy eight from him along with the tubes for a very reasonable price.

Hi Johhny,
I am really interested in a few types that are getting harder to find - especially several each of the 6F5G, 6H6G, and a few other 'G types, maybe a few 6T7G, 6V6G, 5W4G, 5X4G. I would also like to come across some 6G5 or 6U5 eye tubes. What would you be selling these for? I could list some more if I look at my needs. (I am going out of town soon so it may be a few days between responses.)
Thank You,
Eddie

If you do find any old original 300B tubes... esp the WE300B made by Western Electric.... perhaps you should keep it a secret....lol

They sell ( to audiophiles) for hundreds even thousands maybe.
Good luck.

Hi; Are there any 1L6 or 50A1 tubes in your boxes of tubes? If so let me know your price.

Thanks; Andy

If you have any NOS 45, 2A3, or eye tubes, they are worthless. Send them to me for disposal.

:I'll keep my eyes open Doug. I went through about 90 tubes today. Sorting and testing. About 12 were bad and I dumped them. Still have many more to do and will post a list when complete.

I don't think Johnny got your little tongue-in cheek joke.... did he?
7/17/2008 11:14:47 AMDoug Criner
Well, maybe not ;>)

I was just trying to be helpful.

Actually, as Peter knows, NOS 45s, 2A3s, and eye tubes are valuable - maybe $50 or so each? 45s and 2A3s are encountered in antique radios, typically in push-pull pairs, and audiophiles like them too. I don't think audiophiles have yet found a use for eye tubes.

Some time ago, I bought a caddy full of tubes. I have more than gotten my money's worth, primarily from fairly garden-variety tubes, like 6L6, 12SQ7, 50C5, etc. However, it seems like big assortments often have lots of TV tubes - and I'm forever tripping over my big caddy with bunches of TV tubes I'll never use.

Or, assortments have been cherry-picked of their primo tubes. I suspect most of the un-itemized assortments on eBay have been cherry-picked.

:Oh I got it alright. I was just wiped after 12 hours of sorting and testing tubes. This is just the first box of 12. I'm anxious to get the other 11. This box appears to have mostly 6xxx series tubes. If the other boxes are organized as well as this one there should be alot of different tubes yet to be discovered. I'll keep ya posted.

Johnny - My big interest right now is getting enough of the types I mentioned - 6F6G, 6H6G, and 6G5 or 6U5 eye tubes. Other types I might want a few of include 5W4G, 6V6G, 6A8G, 6L7G, and some older types like # 58, # 55, 2A6, 2A7, 2B7, # 39/44, even a # 38, # 57, # 56, maybe Loktal types 7Q7, 7A7, 7H6.......
Since you're looking through them right now.
Thank You,
Eddie

IMPORTANT PS: if they're cheap - you maybe shouldn't bother testing them, just explain they are new-in-box untested (or "salvaged and reboxed / untested", or used, or whatever - if the price is appropriate for that). Sounds like you're already realizing it could take way too much time to test every one of them you have! Just exclude the obvious gassy or broken ones, and any that are so used they have lots of "darkenning" above the filament.

A little tired right now - I really meant that if you want to verify they're OK, you may choose to test them only after someone wants some - it sounds like super-overload if you intend to test a large proportion of 23 big boxfuls!

The straight number is typically the metal tube casing profile on that 6SQ7 and others while the added GT is indicative of being in the domed “glass tube” casing.
If you were to do a Dremel tool with cutoff wheel teardown of that metal tube housing you would find that the blown glass formation on the very top of the
Glass nvelope is not the domed top which the GT uses [A], but a flat top configuration [B] just a bit smaller in size than the metal cased housing that is to be placed down around it and then interfaced with a very shallow skeleton tube base, and finally, having that metal housing electrically connected to pin 1.

The GT version would use the conventional full Bakelite base housing, along with the domed top glass envelope..

Tube listing could be as simple as getting into a Word program ..or Rich Text Formatting and that will at the minimum, let you have the tab feature capability to then compose a Word document of info on your units available…e.g.:

And then you copy and save it as a cell and place it in your pictures and then find an imaging host and have it hosted and therewith, an URL identifier will be assigned to it and you can then post it …en toto…as an “image “ here in a posting.

The other option is to have to hand type it in the dialog box and have to insert ALL of the spacing elements or else it will come out looking like this:

Tube number Brand New/Used Units Available

6SQ7 RCA N 3
6V6G SYL 3N 2U 5
300TH EIMAC N 2
45 RCA N 17
OZ4 GE N 236

Info Exploring...?

To view JUST the valid cell info / area above . . .not the jumbled up mess. . . .set ye olde meese pointere to the right half of the page and just off from the inventory info and HOLD FIRMLY DOWN for what would normally be a left click and then make a fast left swipe (~ one hunna, lebenteen inches per second) and all of the info that is contained within the cell should highlight.

:Thank you EDD! I may just end up throwing these things on ebay as a "LOT". LOT less hassle. I'm not the one to sell things that I haven't checked out myself and I've been testing tubes 'till I'm blue in the face. Nice shade of blue though.

G'DAY Sir EDD,
Long time no hear. I have been following the trend and thought I recognised some of the valves, sorry tubes, so I checked and found 8 x 6H6 (no g) and 5 x 6AC7 still in their original boxes. The markings on the 6H6 box was " JAN-CKR-6H6 VT90 US ARMY-NAVY 1944. What are they worth and are they collectable, as I have no idea ?
