Jacob's ladder
7/4/2008 9:22:16 PMdel in mn
I built one of these when I was a kid, 45 years ago. It was just 2 15 inch wires spaced at about 1 inch at the base and 2 inches apart at the top. I mounted each bare wire in a wood block, 2 X 4?. I hooked a furnace transformer to the bottom of the stiff wires with enough spark to cross at the bottom. That really scared the cat!!

A radio station I worked at moved from downtown to the transmitter site, and they had a HUGE neon sign at the entrance. They didn't want the sign, so we engineers took the transformer and made, among other things, a giant Jacob's ladder. I dont recall the secondary Voltage or current, but it would blow a 20 amp circuit breaker after about five minutes of operation.

I built one as a kid (1960's) also with a neon transformer with a secondary of 75,000 volts. It was a monster. I used brazing rod for the electrodes and found that surronding the electrodes with a clear plastic tube it would perform much better. I sure wish I still had it but it disappeared around the time I discovered girls. I'm sure there is a moral lesson in there somewhere.
