WE 518 W speaker

A local shop has this speaker for sale. I checked the screws going into the speaker and there is no continuity. There are 4 screws. The lead ins connect to the outer of the 4 screws. With no continuity the speaker wires must be disconnected--right. There is An AK 20 C also and it has 5 Cunningham CX301As that look like they came with the set when it was new. I would like to have the set but the speaker might be a problem. What do you guys think? The AK is $80.

Hi Del

You can use just about any speaker with an AK 20. If a modern one, need a small output transformer.

5 - CX301A are possibily the original tubes in the AK. Later replacements would be marked 01A and be ST shaped. These radios aren't hard to get working but audio interstage transformers are often open. They can be replaced.

Older speakers are high impedance and use a coil of fine wire. This wire may be open in the WE speaker? The coil can be rewound but might be a lot of work?

Del: $80 for a complete AK 20C sounds OK to me, but I would offer less.

If the speaker has 4 terminals, it must be a dynamic speaker with a field coil. That isn't what you want for a 20C, even if it weren't burned out.

Thanks for advice. I would not know how to hook an output transformer up to a modern speaker for the AK 20. The AK 20 price is $89 less a 10% discount. I left a $60 offer and that did no good, yet. I have had 20C before but sold all of them years ago. They are a nice little set and it got good reception. I have the ARBE battery eliminator that works just fine. I thought the AK 20 with the CX301As is pretty much as it came from the shop years ago. Of course anyone can find CX 301As and install except the antique dealer would not be able to know that. All the tubes have filament continuity. The price then is really about $50 without the tubes considered. My best wishes to all.

Del: just hook the primary of the output xfmr to the speaker terminals on the radio. Then hook-up the modern permanent-magnet speaker to the xfmr secondary.
