Filament Sag
6/23/2008 10:24:50 AMMike M.
Hi,

Is there such a thing as filament sag. It was mentioned in an article about modifying a tube tester by mounts sockets in the side of the case so the tube would be horizontal when testing.

Does tube orientation matter alot? Should they always be vertical or can they be horizontal or upside down?

Thanks.

filament sag is due to not wearing a bra

Tube manuals will usually note the preferred mounting.
Here's info for a #80 tube:

My Westinghouse WR8 has the chassis mounted horizontally, but the rectifier and output tubes are mounted seperately so that they are upright. It was my understanding that this was done to prevent sagging filaments. Mark from Kalamazoo

Some tube manuals advise mounting certain rectifier tubes such as the 5YG so that the filament pins are in the same horizontal or vertical plane so that filament won't droop and short out another tube element.

Correction-- the rectifier tube is 5Y3G.

Mike: Tell us the tube type.

I can visualize directly heated cathode filaments sag. But not indirectly heated cathodes.
