GE 408 strange dial lamp
6/21/2008 11:06:43 PMDave Froehlich
Hello All,
This 10w dial lamp looks exactly like a night light bulb. It's clear and works on 115 volts. But it has an odd 2 contact bayonet base instead of the regular screw base. Does anyone know where such a bulb can be bought? The bulb says "GE" in the middle of the tip and surrounding that it says "10 W * 115 - 125 v *" If anyone knows, please help.

Thanks,

Dave

Peter,
If this is a sewing machine bulb, I'll go to a fabric store and see if they have one. I think it may be too tall to fit but it's worth a try.

Thanks,

Dave

You might find this bulb at your local Radio Shack

Jim,
I have searched the entire Radio Shack website and they don't sell such a bulb.

Thanks,

Dave

Certainly this was touched up on a few months ago …possibly on the same radio brand…… with the incandescent lamp being in a double contact bayonet basing and operating from raw 120VAC. BUT I couldn’t find it in search thru my 127 pages of posts, but Lewis and Le radio Doctuer had also commented.

The suggested sewing machine lamps will typically be in the top red boxed lamp profile that my illustration shows, with the sides NOT flaring out as shown,or possibly the envelope being too long, or else with the sides bulging out at about the red arrow points that I have shown on another bulb envelope profile.

Assuredly your lamp is as shown at the bottom with its bulging flare out being at the very tip.

I had found one of those lamps for a Silvertone at a FULL service True value hardware store.
The reference that I have shown is from The Mouse House…Mouser, and the direct URL of Chicago miniature lamps is at the top of the reference.

Take note of the coding in the part numbers of DC for double contact…as you can see that common 6S6 lamp comes in a ka-zillion
offerings.

Edd,
I found the bulb at a local electronics distributor for $1.44. It's a 7 watt bulb. I saw the sewing machine bulb but it was too long and that was over $2.00. I went to a lot of other stores and none of them had such a thing. All they had were night light bulbs. I didn't get to the local appliance store. I did look at the bulb on line at an appliance store and they want $6.95 for it. So I'm pretty sure that's what it would cost at any appliance parts place.

Thanks,

Dave

They used those bulbs on many sets, Sentenal, Westinghouse, Arvin. I'm working on a set now that has the bayonet style thats no good. Last time i ended up paying around 4 bucks for one, not again. I'm gonna convert it to a screw in night light style and brind down the wattage also to 5 watts. You don't need 10 watts of light. I have seen a few of these setups with the plastic melted from the heat.

Use the right bulb, but put a 1N400X diode in series with it. The brightness will be about right, and the "fix" can be easily changed back to original.
