Tube Tester Question
5/25/2008 10:39:26 AMGeorge
I am working on a Philco Model 20, started to test the tubes and found out my Jackson tube tester (Model 115) did not have any settings for most of these tubes (24 ,27, 71A). Could someone please recommend a tube tester that can read these tubes and other tubes of this vintage.

Thanks

Hi George

Does your Jackson tester have sockets for 4 and 5 pin tubes? If so there should be obsolete tube data available for the tester.

Hi Norm, thanks for your response. My Jackson tube tester does have both 4 and 5 pin sockets. Do you know where I could find setup data for the 24, 27, 71A tubes?

Thanks

Hi George,
You might contact Chris M (Turboserver) on ARF:

George: I looked on the BAMA site for documentation on your Jackson tube tester - but, no joy.

Here is you radio's schematic: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/582/M0029582.pdf It has three 24s, one 27, and two 71As (in push-pull).

You can check the filaments with an ohmmeter or just seeing if they light up. If those old tubes have good filaments, they are most likely fine for your radio.

Since your set has three 24s, you can shuffle them around to see if there is any difference in performance. Likewise, you have two 71As - the radio should play if either one is good.

What problem are you having with this set? Philcos of this vintage often have open coil winding - you can check them with an ohmmeter.

Hi Doug, I just started to restore this set, changing caps and checking resistors, have not had any problems yet. But without being able to check the tubes it seems more like a hit-and-miss problem. Maybe it will power up once I have everything else up to spec.

Thanks

Hi George

Someone listed tester settings for your tubes on ARF. Like others said tubes most likely will be good. Even if you have a bad one there are ways around it. Your radio uses 2 - 71A's. It will operate with only one of these tubes.

Philco 20 also uses 3 - 24's. If you only have 2 good ones they should be in the two right sockets as shown on the schematic. The radio can be made to operate with just these two.

That only leaves a 27 and 80. Should hear hum by touching grid (pin #3) of the 27. Power supply voltages won't be there if 80 is bad.

Thanks Norm, I got info from ARF, set up on my tube tester and it worked just fine, found two weak #24's everything else look good. Waiting on some new caps I ordered and I will give this thing a try.

Thanks again everyone.

George, I wouldn't worry about those two "weak" tubes. They'll likely work fine after you get the set ready to try.
