Hi all I have been frustrated by non working late 1940s phonograph pick-ups that are the type made of metal and sealed with rivets and have some black gunk in them. I want to replace this can I remove the rivets and fix it??? If not any modern replacements??? or other ideas??

I just found this while googling. Quite interesting. I did not read all the lessons but it seems easy to do your own restoration on those crystal pickups.

Glen,
West Tech Services offers that service for a price. I did my own by putting a modern ceramic stereo unit inside the original can, after drilling the rivets and removing the gunk. Modified the armature to be more compliant, but use the original stylus. Most newer cartridges put out far less audio than the old crystal units, so that may require a pre-amp in some cases. I was able to get more output (near orig. specs) with a new armature/coupling to the ceramic element.
