Philco 38-12 CB Dial Glass Spring Nuts

Bought a beautiful, restored Philco 38-12CB off of EBay, but the original dial glass (plastic) cracked during transit. The seller is sending another glass, but I am clueless about removing the spring nuts holding the cracked glass without breaking their Bakelite mounting studs.I was told by my Elmer to use a curved Dental pick on either side of the nut and GENTLY relieve tension while pulling up on the nut.Any opinions greatly appreciated,as this is a new one for me:)-John

Yep…the one thing that you do NOT
want to do, is break off any of either the pot metal or plastic studs that are sticking up and that the tinner man nuts (or round variants ) are clinching into.

I have two GENERAL brand tapered scratch awls that I have heated to knock the tempering out and then bent an end at 90 degrees for its last ½ inch and then reheated and quench hardened the metal again.

Also, I have some LARGE needles from Wally World’s Sewing department that I also have used.
And yes, I also have some dental tools that were cast aside due to some special curved tips being broken off. That was of no concern to me, as I have also reworked them in the above manner to remake them into gradual tapered straight tips anyhow.

The special manner that you want to concentrate on is to wedge / work them into the slots in the tinner man nuts such that the metal is splayed aside in the direction that the arrows show and then gradually they will be wedged in and spreading the two sides enough that the nut will just release from its two grip areas and then, the nut can be lifted upwards and free from the stud.

Then, on reinstall, you can flat crimp the nuts in either duckbill pliers or a vise to correct for any springing out of the tapers in the removal process.
Reinstallation is EASY, I just use a hollow shaft 3/16 in nutdriver and press them down and over the studs again.
