Motorola FM Stereophonic

Hi All:

Looking for service information on a Motorola "FM Stereophonic" table radio. Label says it is a model B100W, s/n 12975 (90W). It is a 9 tube job. I did not find any info here on the NA site. My problem is hum, so I suspect the filter cap (10uF-250V) or the rectifier tube (6CA4). Any other suggestions? The unit is in almost pristine original condition, it has to be about 45 years old. Any help would be appreciated. My e-mail address is msmpe@att.net. Thanx!

:The Quasar (a.k.a. Motorola) B100W service data is found in Sams Photofact Set 669 - folder 9.

I do not happen to have that folder...hopefully one of the other members might. Or.......if you live near a large library branch that stocks the photofacts you can try there.

Regards,

Dennis

By the way, if the hum is constant and is NOT variable via the volume control, it's a good bet the filter electrolytic is bad.

Upgrade that to two Heeeew-mongous canned filters…with that mere 10 ufd unit being the lesser of all of the values. Most assuredly, in these current times…you will have to place in separate individual sections to replace the discarded multifunction cans.Concur also on the volume control having no effect in overriding the hum effect….if set to its lowest position…since the problem is corruption of the DC purity of the whole power supply.

The only additional electrolytics not schematically depicted are C3 in the ratio detector output circuitry and C4 which is the common shared cathode bypassing function for the tandem A.F. output tubes.

Here is a thumbnail PS schema for that circa ’62 unit:
